Located 60 kms north of Dar es Salaam about one hour drive from Dar es Salaam. It is nicknamed as ‘’Bwaga moyo’’ which means lay down the burden of your heart because it was a relaxing place for the slaves and Arab traders after a long tiring walking journey from the Tanganyika interior of about 1,600 kms before they were transported to Zanzibar stone town which was the main slave market in East Africa at that time. Basically, Bagamoyo was the last stop and the transit route of the central slave and ivory trade during the 19th century and a place of memories of human tragedy and sufferings due to slave trade.
Today there are still some remains of the buildings which were used during slave and ivory trade era. Therefore, this place has an extraordinary historical and cultural heritage attraction hence became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Moreover, in the 1868 this town was the home of the first Roman Catholic Church in Tanganyika. In addition, it was an entry port of Arab, Indian and European traders in the east coast of Africa. Furthermore, Bagamoyo became the capital of Tanganyika from 1889 to 1891, and in 1929 it was awarded the status of a township. The interaction and fusion of different people in this town led to the emergence of different cultures and ethnic groups such as Nyamwezi, Sukuma and Manyema as well as Goans. On top of that Bagamoyo has undiscovered amazing and clean beaches and a snorkeling place called mwamba kuni.
