Marangu

This route is nicknamed as the Coca Cola route. It is popular and the most crowded and easiest route among all the routes. Moreover this route contains well built dormitories thus makes it easier and comfortable to stay during hiking. In addition, this route is perfect during the rainy season due to the presence of the huts and gentle slopes. However, it is usually crowded because it is used both for ascending and descending. Even other routes use it for descending.

Itinerary (6 days)

DAY 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

Our professional driver will take you from your hotel to Marangu Gate for the registration and getting hiking permit. The hiking is done through the beautiful tropical rain forest looking for towering Eucalyptus trees that has bird life and wildlife such as the Blue Colobus monkeys and nice hills. Dinner and overnight will be at Mandara hut.

 

DAY 2: Mandara to Horombo hut

You will be walking in a steep slope through the forest into the grassy moorland and clear weather. Also there is a great chance of viewing the stunning peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi.

 

DAY 3: Horombo to Kibo Hut

  • Hiking distance: 10km
  • Hiking time: 6-8 Hours; Alpine Desert
  • Accommodation: Kibo Hut

 

You will continue walking through the lunar desert of the Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo until you reach at the bottom of the crater wall around the midday. It is important to take care of any signs of altitude sickness because there is no running water at Kibo huts. On this day there will be a few hours of sleep and a short night as well as a short rest before going to the summit.

 

DAY 4: Summit then descend to Horombo Hut

  • Hiking distance: 4 km up; 14km down
  • Hiking time: 10-15Hours; Alpine Desert
  • Accommodation: Horombo Hut

 

The journey to the summit begins at 1 am walking by using flashlights for about 6 hours to the Gillman’s point by sunrise whereby you will be climbing over lose volcanic screen in a zigzag path. After arriving at the Gillman’s point you will have some time to stretch out your muscles then you will start another interesting walk of about three hours to the Uhuru peak and then go back to the horombo hut.

 

DAY 5: Horombo to Marangu hut

  • Distance: 18km
  • Time: 5-7 Hours
  • Accommodation: Moshi/ Arusha

 

After breakfast you will begin walking through the moorland to Mandara hut all the way to the park gate. Here the tour guide will collect your hiking certificates and then you will have lunch followed by songs of happiness and giving some tips to the guides and porters and finally return to your hotel
